• Chocolate body butter

    Since my diet overhaul, I’ve been looking very carefully at everything I’ve been putting my body into contact with. I even did science at university and I don’t understand half of what’s on the label of most beauty products! Scary.

    I mean I’ve always been fascinated with the marketing hype of beauty products—it seems to me that two types of sales pitches seem to win out: Scientifically proven and like nature intended. But the thing is, neither of those seem to be very accurate portrayals of the products available.

    So what if I told you I had a recipe for creamy, rich body butter that moisturised like no other (without forcing you to keep using it), was completely natural and was decadent to boot?

    And what if I then told you that it smelt like chocolate?

    And that it was super easy?

    Maybe that would convince you. But in case it hasn’t, I’ll share what my work friends had to say when I bought it in for them to try. The comments went along the lines of this: ‘That smells amazing!’, ‘I want the recipe’, ‘you made this?’, ‘I want to lick my hands…’, and I could continue. It really is that good.

    It’s great for dry skin as it really sinks in, but don’t let that scare you if you tend to have oily skin. The natural oils in the body butter once applied seem to tell your body it doesn’t need to produce any more oil and it seems to all balance out. The coconut oil is also antibacterial and is great for acne prone skin (I use straight coconut oil on my face as a moisturiser, it’s perfect).

    Plus, in the lead up to Christmas, it would make a perfect gift. Sorry (well not really), I know it’s still a long way off, but I love Christmas (really, really love), and if you want to make something as a gift, sometimes you need some time to, you know… make something for yourself before making something to share.

    Chocolate body butter

    Makes two standard body butter sized tubs, Adapted from Holistic Kid

    Ingredients

    1 cup cocoa butter

    1/2 cup coconut oil

    1/2 cup liquid oil (I used half macadamia and half grapeseed, but any mix or blend would work, even extra coconut oil)

    A few drops favourite essential oils, optional (these are strong so a little goes a long way—too much can cause allergic reactions, so do some research if in doubt, 10 drops should be safe for this recipe)

    Method

    1. Melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler until liquid. Take off heat and mix through liquid oil.

    2. Place in the fridge to cool until so start to see some of the mix go opaque, don’t let it harden completely though (mine took 2 hours, but I used an icepack to speed it along, so it could take longer).

    3. Once the mix starts to go opaque and is completely cool, add essential oils if desired (I didn’t and it still smells divine) and whip with electric beaters until it turns into a white fluffy cream.

    4. Put into tubs and store in a cool, dark place.

    5. Apply liberally, everywhere! I use it on my lips too (all the ingredients are edible).

    6. If it melts from getting too warm or sitting in the sun, simply cool and rewhip. Alternately you can be lazy and let it harden as is, but it will be harder to use.

    Notes and suggestions: Put into little metal tins to make travel size or to use as lip balm. Make pretty labels and put them in a nice tub to gift to friends. Buy some cute mini tea tins or clean some old body butter containers to reuse. Add some beeswax in step 1 for some extra stability if using as a lip balm and some peppermint oil for some minty pow! Research various essential oil combinations for relaxation, stress relief. If using essential oils, please do some research first! Some shouldn’t be used in pregnancy, citrus can increase sun damage, etc. If used correctly, they’d be a wonderful addition though. Or you could simply spread it on hot toast. And eat it.

      Hey! I found a recipe for body butter that was essentially this the other day – 50/50 butter and oil. I was going to nab some cocoa butter off you at some point and use it with the grape seed oil we have for the Small Person’s bath, but I like the addition of coconut oil. And given macadamia oil speeds absorption, that seems like a sensible ingredient too!

      I’ll have to post that list of useful oils at some point…

        I love coconut oil. I didn’t know that about macadamia oil though! Fascinating. I love your post on the benefits of different oils too and I can’t wait to make your body scrub!
